Rising southern rapper Josh Scott has been consistently honing in on his craft in 2021. After his “Texas” single broke last month, he returns to the scene with a fire follow-up titled “Who Dis.” During the pandemic, he relocated from Louisiana to Houston, allowing him to get one step closer to achieving his dream of a successful Hip Hop recording artist.

I had the pleasure of catching up with the newcomer for a short convo centered around his desire to pursue music, plans for the year, and being inspired by his DJ mother. Check it out below and get to know this hidden rap gem.

Josh Scott Interview

At what age did you realize you wanted to pursue a rap career and who inspired you to take the risk?

I knew I wanted to rap early when I was about nine years old, which is when I first saw bow wow on tv doing his thing. My mom was already a DJ heavy in the streets back in my hometown, and music was always a big deal in my home. So much music got played, from country music to soul, to rock and R&B. So early on, I knew for some reason music was what I wanted to do. Rap was just the genre that spoke to me best, I guess because of my uncles, cousins, and friends in the streets and my mom’s passion for Hip Hop. I also am a vast UGK fan.

How did you get your start in the music business?

Josh Scott Interview

I got my start in rap early with a friend by the name of Alex Austin. We met our freshmen year in high school and would beat on the lunch tables while freestyling against each other. We both had a unique talent and a rare love for music. I would go to him for the latest mixtapes, and he was always on point no matter what. Our parents knew each other, so after learning that we became friends, we started a group, and about three years into that, my cousin noticed our talent and began to manage us until we parted ways.

Where are you from and currently based?

I was born and raised in Houma, Louisiana, which is 45 miles south of New Orleans. We sit right in the middle of Houston and New Orleans, so both cities have a significant influence on the music I came up around. My mom loved UGK, so Texas music was played heavily around me, and a particular love was gained for the state and the city of Houston, Texas. I recently moved to Houston to pursue a Hip Hop career because it is a bigger city that has always influenced me. Houston also gives me a chance to make it to the big leagues, and then I can showcase my talent.

What can we expect next from you?

What you can expect next from me is just more good music. I plan on putting out a few more singles and some more videos in the works, as well as more photoshoots.

When can we expect a complete project from you?

You can expect an album by the end of the year. It is already done, but I don’t want too many ears to hear it before the time of its scheduled release.

What is one thing people don’t know about you?

One thing people don’t know about me is that I am a hidden gem. I am here to give people good music and something the game has been missing. I make music that can compete but also has substance. I love Hip Hop, but I have a love for all types of music.
